The Double Standard

Lawmaker: I went skinny-dipping with this teen

Salt Lake City, Utah:  House majority leader

Caught with his pants down 25 years later at age 55 and after having the woman who obviously was a girl at the time, promise not to tell by bribing her.  He was in his twenties at the time of the offense [an offense today]. The House Majority Leader gave this woman $150,000 dollars of hush money. Somehow the information still got out, and the House Majority Leader makes these startling pronouncements:

  1. It happened 25 years ago.
  2. I was 28 years old.
  3. We were skinny dipping and after we just sat there.

Let’s see how this plays out today:

House Majority Leader                                   Ordinary Person

1. It happened 25 years in the past.                1. It happened 25 years in the past.

2. I was 28 years old, she 15.                        2. I was only 18 years old, she 16.

3. We were skinny dipping that’s all.              3. We had consensual sex. She lied.

The ordinary person winds up as a sex offender. He has to register as a sex offender and depending on which state he lives he has to register for life as a sexual predator, while on the other hand,

The House Majority Leader will not be called a sex offender; he will not have to register as a sex offender.

Does skinny dipping with a 15 year old make much difference as to the crime? The House Majority Leader 13 years older than the girl, and the boy only 2 years older, and as is often done, the girl lies about her age. It happens so often, that it is not funny.

The House Majority Leaders supporters say he is such an upstanding individual, and others in the boy’s circumstance said the same thing about the boy. Why today is the boy still a registered sex offender – maybe for life, constantly being hit over the head with each new law that comes down the shoot?

Does not this speak of double standard? Remember Foley? I bet some of you can remember other senators and representatives of congress, and of your own state legislature, or local legislature just walk away without nary a word of sex offender mentioned, or a DA office pressing charges, not for things done in the past like the boy, but for present day happenings that are clearly sex offenses.

There are two types of people today in this society called America, 1) those that hate and hate, and who speak often of vigilantism, 2) those who think with soundness and fairness of mind, and they find their voices shouted down or dismissed altogether because it is not what the common mind of hate wants to hear.

Why not hate the politician? The politician must be better, or it was just a mistake in judgment, that must be it.

How many of you readers can see how obnoxious this is every time it happens? Can you see how unjust and unfair sex offender laws have become toward the powerless? When you start demanding that these politicians be charged with an admitted crime against a minor, and not let it pass you will enter into the camp of the sound and fair.

If you don’t want to do what is the right thing to do, then help Gimeweb and other grassroots groups change the laws in your state and in every state across this land of America. The powerless deserve better treatment even though some of you I am quite sure don’t think so.

There will soon be a law in Colorado that says: If a person simulates masturbation even though fully clothed, that person can be charged with a sex offense, and if convicted have to register as a sex offender. Are these the laws you really want? Some of you do, but what about the rest of you. When will you start helping to set the laws straight?

Help the people in your state. Have the courage to come out of the shadows of fear and help.
